A fine portrait by any standard, this picture by Denis Thorpe of a miner is an example of how the portrait is a significant part of photo journalism. It was taken after the miner had returned from his first shift after the miner's strike. It shows the tired, grimy face of a man who had fought a long battle, but in the end had to accept that things were changed forever.

When John Hocknell went to a Norfolk fair his brief was to get something for the next edition. He found this twelve-year-old girl and her pet; always worth a quick shot while you are looking for something better. Like all good professionals he took the child's name – Diana Spencer. When eight years later she became Princess of Wales the picture was in world wide demand, and sadly was used again when she died.
