A fine portrait by any standard, this picture by Denis Thorpe of a miner is an example of how the portrait is a significant part of photo journalism. It was taken after the miner had returned from his first shift after the miner's strike. It shows the tired, grimy face of a man who had fought a long battle, but in the end had to accept that things were changed forever.

When John Hocknell went to a Norfolk fair his brief was to get something for the next edition. He found this twelve-year-old girl and her pet; always worth a quick shot while you are looking for something better. Like all good professionals he took the child's name Diana Spencer. When eight years later she became Princess of Wales the picture was in world wide demand, and sadly was used again when she died.
